Digger
« on: November 09, 2014, 03:50:10 pm »
(WARNING: Contains intense themes, often out of nowhere. There's some language too, but nothing beyond PG13, I don't think.)

I just finished reading this recently, but this is one of my favorite graphic novels next to Bone.

Digger is pretty much anything you could want in a fantasy story. I mean that literally, too--it juxtaposes all sorts of elements, and yet the story still works perfectly. There's obscure mythological creatures next to anthropomorphic animals, beauty and poetry next to clever geeky jokes, real religion (mostly Hinduism) next to playful fantasy, and plenty of different cultures and philosophies. Also, the writer has a degree in anthropology, and seems to know pretty much everything about everything. The more academic experience you have, the more you'll get out of the comic (I definitely plan on re-reading it after a few years of college).

The story centers around a very pragmatic wombat named Digger, who somehow ends up in the temple of a sentient statue of Ganesh. Digger generally tries not to get associated with gods, so as you might imagine, hilarity ensues. It's basically an adventure story, but there's also a lot of philosophy talk, as Digger explores a world whose values are very different from her own. All the characters are extremely likeable, especially Digger herself, so it's a great comic to read if you don't mind a fairly slow pace.

(Also, each strip of the comic has a Comment Board--strangely, I haven't seen a single uncivilized comment. I mean, not ONE. I don't think I've ever seen a website which has managed to achieve that. I guess it's because Digger never shows certain opinions to be completely right or completely wrong--it just encourages readers to think.)
