Sanctum
« on: February 25, 2015, 08:38:52 pm »

Inspired by Type Moon's "Fate" series

Sanctum is where all Mana originates. Mana is raw power that can be manipulated in an art known as Magecraft. All mages have a small amount of Mana that is supplied by Sanctum. However, there exists a key... an artifact that has the power to open the gates to Sanctum for the use of one person, and one person only. And when that person eventually meets his or her demise, the key is sealed away and a great battle emerges – a war between those who all seek the Key to Sanctum.

A lucky few will receive, one way or another, the means to summon a Heroic Spirit – an incarnation of an ancient hero to fight alongside them. A small supply of Mana is required to sustain this spirit's physical form, but it is well worth it – Heroic Spirits contain incredible power. Day is a time of rest, and Night is a time of chaos. The winner will receive the Sanctum Key, which will grant them unlimited power until their time is up in this world.

Thus the Sanctum War begins, a battle royale between determined mages and the spirits that fight alongside them.

The Competition

This CST is a competition among writers. Each participant creates a mage character to participate in the Sanctum War. At the end of the first day, each mage summons a heroic spirit and the war begins. Widm, the game master, will create all of the Heroic Spirit characters, and assign them to the participants.

Every night cycle, all mages along with their spirits (and by extension, all participants) will engage in a battle against each other. First, you engage with another mage within the story. Submit to Widm your version of the battle. Be sure to be very detailed and write the best story you can. When you are finished, He will judge the battle and determine the winner, which will be considered CANON and posted in the main thread. Once all mages have participated and all writers have finished, Widm will complete the Night Cycle. Among the losing writers, Widm will decide the one that performed the worst. This writer is eliminated from the competition. Soon after in the story the eliminated writer must make a final post for their mage's death or surrender from the competition. After all of this, the remaining participants post for the daytime for things such as your mage's preparation for the next night. Your collective story among your day and night posts will have an impact on your survival. After the day post, the cycle continues and night falls again, ensuing in another battle. In the event of a night in which there are an odd number of participants, the participant from the previous night whom Widm has determined to have the best battle will receive immunity and not have to partake in a battle. This Day-Night cycle continues until there are only two remaining... and the showdown ensues.

May the best writer win.

Sign-Ups

Sign ups are open! Spend some time creating your character, their surface qualities as well as their deepest secrets. In your public sign up form, only display what would be public information. Limit how much you tell in your initial sign up. Your REAL sign up form will be submitted directly to Widm (The Octahedral Box), containing more information: Tier 1 info, and Tier 2 info. Tier 1 is what you are okay with being revealed in story on your first night, and Tier 2 is the more hidden information on your character. In your first fight, your Tier 1 info is given to your opponent, and vice versa. In round 2 and subsequent rounds, Widm will disclose all of your information, Tier 1 and 2, to each of your opponents as your battles arise. The key is using the information given to you about your opponent, and study them by reading their daytime posts and examining their past battles to make an accurate fight.

Tier 1 info generally refers to speech patterns and a basic idea of what your mage and spirit can do in combat. Please provide enough information for your potential rival to make an accurate fight. Likewise, don't take too much from your tier 2 info when your opponent doesn't have access to it.

Tier 2 info is a more detailed description of your character. Back stories, plans and hidden powers all come into play here. Everything you need to know about your character is ultimately revealed in Tier 2. Please, for the sake of the story, don't completely spill all of your enemy's secrets right off the bat in your posts.

At the start of the competition, two people will know everything about your character: Yourself, and Widm, who possesses your full character form. Everyone else initially only has access to your public profile, which is posted here as a way to sign up. As the story progresses, you can learn more about your opponents by reading their posts and taking the hints!

Public Profile (Post in this thread):

Full name:

Nickname: (The name your character goes by)

Appearance: (Height, race, eye color, and all of that. You may enclose a sketch.)

Other: (All details that you want to make public for all spectators and participants at the beginning.)

Full Profile (Submit this to Widm):

Tier 1 Information

Tier 2 Information

Other important information

For all other information you shall specify in your first few posts, which tell your back story (or, at least, what you chose to reveal) and eventually lead to your mage summoning your heroic spirit, which will be assigned to you by Widm. You may make a couple of posts after this, but soon night will fall and the first battle will begin.

[Important note: Entirely comedic characters are banned. Humor as a basis puts you at an unfair advantage.]

Disclaimer: This is a competition. There are no retcons. There are no takebacks, and you may not question the game master, Widm. If you lose early on, don't complain- it is your choice to partake in this competition! That being said, BEGIN!
In that moment, there was only silence.

Full name: Zain Krauss

Nickname: Krauss

Appearance: Krauss is on the younger side of middle-aged and appears little bit past his prime.  His hair is light gray, and he has a thin beard.  He dresses in formal clothing altered to be better suited for fighting (no loose ends getting in the way, allows for full mobility), with a black jacket, a light blue inner shirt, and black pants.  He wears two golden bracelets on each arm.

Other: Krauss is unmarried and a member of a relatively well-known and rich (not famous, exactly, but at the bottom of the higher social circles) family.  His brother, as the firstborn, is entitled to a larger portion of the estate, but Krauss himself is still by no means poor.  He himself is rather reclusive and lives alone, hardly ever appearing for social events.  His family is known to specialize in forcefield manipulation.

Other: She was, formerly a maid, of a past magician family, Mahagany. After the death of the family head, she took his notes, researching magic for herself, with a manipulation of glass. While formerly a friendly and polite girl, she now seems to be an emotionless, but also arrogant, magi.

Full name: David Arnold Schindler

Nickname: David/Dave

Appearance: 35. A tall, athletic, powerful man; David is pale by birth yet tanned by time spent out in the sun. He sports some rather impressive stubble despite his baldness, and is usually wearing a heavy jacket and a glare. His four combat outfits are forest camouflage, desert camouflage, urban camouflage, and winter camouflage respectively.

Other: One of the youngest officers in magus military history, David achieved the rank in only his late teen years. There was some talk of his possible future promotion to general when he was only in his twenties. Alas, it was not to be, and David retired at age 28. Since then, he has worked as an elite tutor and mentor for young and powerful magi. He is selective about who he teaches, harsh in his methods, and he enforces strict discipline, but besides that little is known. His, results, however, are consistently remarkable. Many spectators are interested to see just what the powerful commando-turned-mentor-turned-contestant can really do.

Not for a few days. Widm has to make the Heroic spirits and we'd like 8 participants.

Full name: Madame Maxine Harkess Cline

Nickname: Madame

Age: 37

Other: Madame is the headmaster of the Prestigious Teyan Academy. The origins of her positions remain unclear but many students speculate it comes from her iron will and magic prowess. Her entry into the competition was a sudden surprise, her name simply marked as Ms. Cline on the list. While not training her magic, Madame teaches Algebra at the academy.

[I'll be away from my PC this weekend. Amazing timing, I know. Preparation posts are now open, and the sign-up period will be over very soon. I have to make this post a bit early to keep up with everyone else later on.]

Alexis Conzette

Sunday. 6:59 AM. Conzette Manor.

Forty Five.

Alexis looked down from the balcony before she made her descent. She stepped down the stairs at a slow, even pace. Eyes closed, but ears acute- she had taken this path perhaps a thousand times. She could now navigate by the sound of the ticking clocks alone. After nine steps the floor below her feet flattened out, signaling her to turn around and continue by the railing to the next set of stairs.

Thirty.

Another nine steps past. It was a tradition she had kept up to count the time, starting at forty five seconds, for her to reach the basement from the stairwell across from her room. It was an odd ritual, but one that she religiously upheld, much akin to the ticking rhythm that guided her.

Fifteen.

The final flight before her destination. The basement was her true home, the rest of Conzette Manor a simple drawer of supplies for living needs. All she really, truly needed, in her own eyes, was in the basement. The floor no longer yielded descent, and Alexis opened her eyes. In front of her stood the old doors to her father's library. She reached out her hand and grasped the doorknob.

Zero.

Across the manor, every ticking clock resounded. It was 7:00 AM.

Alexis dropped her solemn demeanor and jogged her way through the library to the desk where she had left off. Last night she had seized yet another book that was filled with valuable knowledge of magecraft, and she was eager to continue her studies. She once again read the old cover- "The Book of Silence". She grasped the bookmarked page but was interrupted by another echo across her residence- not one she had expected to hear, the doorbell. Alexis sighed, let go of her book and ran to the exit, careful to shut the library's doors.

She made her way up the stairs to meet the one at the door. The ringer was a peculiar man from some sort of postal service, but there was no logo on his uniform nor a truck outside of her manor; there was only the man and the package he had come to deliver. She hadn't ordered one, but decided against speaking when the man said that the package was for a man named Daniel Conzette. Without a word she signed on his behalf and shut the door.

It was quite a heavy box, wrapped in some very thick paper that looked older than her. She carried it all the way down to the library and set it next to the tome she was about to read. Alexis glanced to The Book of Silence, then back to the package. Curiosity overwhelmed her and she tore the paper off furiously. The box enclosed was of dark oak wood, polished to perfection but very weathered. Enclosed was a small book and an object wrapped in cloth. She picked up the book.
In that moment, there was only silence.

Zain Krauss

Krauss sat in a corner of an empty room, staring at the picture in his lap.  There were only three other rooms in the medium-sized apartment – his bedroom, a bathroom, and the kitchen.  He knew that if he went back to his family manor, where he would have an entire floor to himself, his brother would welcome him back with open arms.  But to Krauss, this was a fate worse than death.  Krauss supposed one could call this room his study, despite the fact that he only ever studied one thing.

The picture Krauss held was of his older brother – Johannes Krauss – being sworn in as a lord of a territory.  Johannes oversaw his land well, and had been consistently ranked among the world's top 100 influential people.  Usually in the top 50.

Long ago, when I was still a child, I swore to leave a mark.  To surpass him, no matter what he did.

And who was Krauss, after all this time?  Still the little brother.  And now the little brother was aged himself, too old to have any real hopes of achieving great things, too old to prevent his magic from slowly slipping into decay.

Krauss’s bracelets had been unconsciously shifting in shape as he thought, and he looked down when he felt a sharp pain in his wrist.  One of his bracelets was now a rather small triangle, trying to squeeze inward and become even smaller.  He sighed and reverted the bracelets back to a circular shape.  It was time to get ready – practice his spells and techniques, come up with strategies… and prepare for the day's big event.

Krauss turned the picture back toward the wall and pulled out a piece of notebook paper hidden behind the image.  As he walked out the door, a rare smile danced on his lips.

Whatever happens, I’m not long for this world.

Madame
Madame sat in a library.
"An event you say." A customer said.
"Yes, keep it down." The librarian said,
"Significant?"
"Of course? But you have to keep your mouth shut, it isn't for anyone you've ever heard of."
"In what way?"
"Can't say now can I?"
"Well how do I enter?"
"There's the thing, you don't."
"Some help you are."
"All I'm permitted to say." The librarian shrugged.
Madame put a hand on the back of the librarian's shoulder. "If I may intervene, you have a letter for me?"
"Ms. Cline! I mean Madame Cline. I have two letters for you sent to the library."
"Two? Only one was to be sent here."
"Should I keep the second one."
"Don't be silly." Madame snatched the letters out of the man's hand, "I'll be off now."
"Goodbye Madame!"
Madame walked out the front door of the library, putting the letters in her coat.

"Was that Max Harkess?" The customer said.
"You don't refer to her as that."
"I went to school with her, I don't remember her being anything like that."
"I'm surprised you remember her at all. She's a client of mine."
"You mean for the library?"
"Of course." The librarian said after a pause, "Frequent, reader here."
