Mosaiah

Click.

Tap.

She stirred, slightly. Consciousness was regaining. Her eyesight as blurred, when she opened her eyelids, head hurting. At first, she was unaware of her surroundings, only the tapping of what she thought were footsteps, and the ache of her body from her knockout.

When she rolled her head, attempting to lift herself back up, she heard a soft sigh, and then ruffled movements. Mosaiah blinked a few times, trying to clear her vision, and looked up to see, the face of the old man from before when she was knocked out.

Normally, the female would be angry to come in such close proximity of another human being. But, the sight of the old man, somehow calmed her, something vaguely familiar. The elderly male looked back down at her, looking saddened, his eyes appearing to be moist. When he spoke to her, his tone sounded something remorseful.

"I apologize, I am truly sorry... I did not mean to cause you such harm... When you fell down, I positioned you to be in a less uncomfortable position, but I did not know the exact extent of the injury."

She blinked again, then shook her head. Whatever his issue was, she wasn't wanting to deal with weak behavior, at this moment. While it made her feel, somewhat, bad about disregarding someone showing such empathy, the reasons why was a little more concerning.

Tap.

Placing a hand to her own head, she sat up. The elderly man stuck a hand out, encase he needed to assist her, but refrained from touching the female. Once she was fully sat up, she noticed the man was wearing old fashioned robes, sitting cross-legged beside the female. He had long, white-silvery hair, as well as a lengthy beard. Ontop of his head, was an old fur hat.

He opened his mouth, but then closed it again, being unsure as how to speak to the female. Mosaiah, spent another moment to recollect her thoughts. She figured, this was likely the servant described in the book. She had not read deeply into the purpose of the servant, but she knew it involved a war of sorts. Lowering her hand to the ground, she pushed herself up, followed by the eyes of the elderly man. The glass shards that had previously made the glass guardian, recollected themselves, then formed themselves into a throne-like seat, which the female sat herself upon. After sighing, she then addressed the man.

"You're the servant I've summoned?" The man nodded.

"Yes, I am... Caster." Mosaiah nodded slightly, sighing. Caster... While she would have liked a more physical guard, Caster was certainly a viable ally. Likely, he should be capable of teaching her to better work her magical capabilities, being limited as she was. However, she then realized, how much she lacked in knowledge in this apparent war, her possibly being in danger of harm. More so than she already was, anyway.

"Caster... I'm going to need you to tell me more about this war." Caster then nodded in agreement, relocating himself in-front of the female, and began his explanation of events.

David

The giant had seated himself in the middle of the room, where the summoning circle had been, and was now scrutinizing a massive sword. David took the opportunity to study the giant more closely. He was nearly nine feet tall, which was clear despite his seated position; with the physique of a Greek God that was in full display. The giant wore only a  tattered rag that didn't reach his knees. The sword, by contrast, was elegant and flawless; the craftsmanship inconceivable for a weapon of its stature. Not a speck of dust was visible on the bronze blade, and it seemed to glow with a soft light, at odds with the behemoth that held it. His face was framed with touseled, wild black curls that flared out around his bronze helm. The eyes, gleaming in the shadows, were uncomprehending.

"Wh- Who are you?"
No answer.

"Are you here to assist me in the war?"
The great head turned, frowning, and then turned back. No confirmation, no denial.

"Is it that you can't talk or won't? Please? Something? Anything?"
The man's fist rammed into the floor, splintering the tiles. Annoyance.

Frightened, David retreated into the doorway. The man was still.

Zain Krauss

A silver car drove through the streets of the city: the general at the wheel, and Krauss sitting next to him.  The general maneuvered the car with one hand, and held his rhomphaia in the other.  They had spent the rest of the day discussing battle strategy: the general was naturally good at it, while Krauss's experience and long hours of research allowed him to contribute some ideas.

Krauss spoke.  "Everything's ready, then."

"Yes.  I must admit, I'm not used to fighting in this style."

"But you agree it's the best option."

"Yes.  And a true master of battle must be able to function regardless of the conditions."  The general looked out the window.  "Is this the area you were talking about?"

Krauss nodded.  "Yes, the industrial district.  A perfect place for battles in the Sanctum War.  Now all we have to do is find our target, and eliminate them."

((A rhomphaia is kind of like a very long scythe, except not so drastically curved (instead, it's only slightly curved toward the inside edge).  The general's is slightly longer than normal, and has a hook at the back end.))

Madame
"My lord, I've found you an opponent. He goes by the name Professor Pronto."
"Really?"
"Yeah, he's some sort of a philosopher. Keeps his face secret? I don't know what's up with him."
"Any others?"
"Yes actually, we have two more, but they seem more, deadly."
"Go on."
"David Arnold Schindler."
"He's military correct?"
"Former, He is incredibly powerful."
"I could take him, for sure."
"I wouldn't be so certain my lord."
Madame jotted down some information in her notebook. "The other one?"
"Zain Krauss"
"Krauss? I'm fairly certain I've killed that man's nephew. Not important, why is he a problem for me?"
"He's quite powerful and very clever, he could get around you my lord. I've sent you some more detailed information."
Madame glanced at her computer screen, "Indeed."
"I'll leave you with that, prevail my lord and we shall enter a new age of magic."
Madame hung up.
She took out the rose in her hair. "Avec discrétion, confiance une," She said quietly.
"Are we ready?" A man stepped in to the room, wearing a suit and holding a giant red bow."
"We are." Madame stood up, "Let's get to the car, the battles begin soon."
"I assume we are using the plan we discussed."
"Quite correct."
Madame and the tall man got on the elevator and descended to the basement.

"And your name sir?" the driver said, eyeing the man.
"Don't mind it," Madame said, waving off the driver as they got in the back seat, "Take us to the Harkess Bank and release my message."

Berserker
Thinking in words was quite annoying. It was so much easier to think in concepts. Blood. Battle. The stench of rotting corpses. The corpse of a brother, a friend. The flash of steel. The moans of the injured. The soldier's honor. The soldier's disgrace. The rival city. The rival man. The cry of man and animal, the thud of metal on bone.

Of course, Berserker could not comprehend these terms, their significance, their connotations in this overly complicated, utterly insane society. He merely saw flashes of them. Some may say he was insane. He had no patience for that, no patience for anything. There was no sane, no insane. There simply was. Right now, he was, he existed, he fought, he lamented, he killed, and he would continue to kill. The battle was about to begin; even though he had no way of knowing, he could feel it in his bones; the thrill of combat, the life and the death. It was not the final battle, for war was eternal. It was not an obstacle to be destroyed, not a threshold to be crossed. It was like him. It simply was.

David
"I think I will call you Berserker. If you don't like that, you can tell me how to refer to you. Do you understand? Are you ignoring me now, or do you simply not comprehend?"

Berserker nodded once.

"I really hope you know what I'm telling you right now. If not, I'm kinda screwed. But the battle's about to begin, and we really need to get moving. I'm going to win this, and I hope you can help with that."

Berserker did not react.

"I'll go ahead and be real optimistic and hope that that is a confirmation. Follow me if you plan on helping. If not, pray for me, whatever god you worship. I'm going to need it."

Berserker

Berserker frowned a little at the word god. He did not know the language, but something gave him a sense of... understanding. He saw images. Familiar. Unpleasant.

The mortal walked outside, through the large frame. Berserker waited several seconds, considering without actually thinking. It was more like a war among his instincts.

He followed. The frame was damaged. Berserker walked on.

David
"Right, good. There's a construction site a couple blocks south of here. not really a destination, but I sorta want to get a sense of you, and maybe if we're actually moving, doing something productive, it'll work better. By the way, you're okay with Berserker, right?"

Berserker
Berserker was tired of delaying. If the mortal was no match for him in speed, then the mortal would cope. Berserker strode ahead, utilizing the powerful lunges that came with enhanced strength. He reached a... something. The words were provided. Cunnn.... strucshun. Beserker stopped.

Alexis Conzette

After a few minutes of work, there was a knock on the library's door and Alexis suddenly remembered that she didn't live alone. Saber looked to her, awaiting a command. She mouthed in response, "Hide". In a dim flash of light, he vanished just as an older maid opened the door.

"What on earth is transpiring down here, Miss Alexis?" The maid was baffled by the mess the ritual had made. The summoning circle was now gone, though.

"Ah, it's nothing. Just a little experiment, that's all."

"Do try to refrain from your little experiments until after you've had your breakfast, dear."

Alexis suddenly remembered how hungry she had gotten. She ran past her maid up the stairs to the dining room, where a meal was getting cold. She yelled out to the kitchen, "Sorry, Gemina!"

She took a sip of milk just as her servant, still in spirit form, spoke out to her. "I see you're keeping your involvement with the war a secret."

She almost spit out her milk. Alexis swallowed and promptly flushed at the unexpected message. "You nearly gave me a heart attack!" she harshly whispered.

"My apologies."

"But yeah, it's best my family doesn't know of this right now. You can't be seen in public until I can find a way to make you blend in. For now, stay invisible."

"Yes, Ma'am."

Later that morning Alexis returned to the basement to finish up cleaning. As Saber placed books back on their shelves in alphabetical order, he took notice of an old piece of literature titled "La Matière de la France". He examined the cover curiously, then quickly placed it on the shelf to continue his work.

Alexis walked over to her desk and unlocked a hidden compartment. She brought out a dusty book, approximately the size of a dictionary, simply titled "The Anthology".

Later that day, when the sun had fallen and the moon shown its face, Alexis sat in her room, sifting through her master tome. Saber was now clad in regular clothes- he wore a blue t-shirt and black jeans. He flinched for a second- he sensed something. A being of immense power was making no attempt at remaining in secrecy, exerting an inhuman amount of power. There was only one kind of servant who would act so rashly, he concluded.

"Master..."

"Yes, Saber?"

"I can sense another Servant. The time to act is upon us."

Alexis stood up and closed her book. "I'm ready if you are."

"Bear in mind... It would be unwise to underestimate our first opponent. I would advise you to seek my protection."

"I'll be fine."

"Don't you trust me?"

"Trust is something you will have to earn, Servant."

Saber sighed. "Well... be careful."
In that moment, there was only silence.

Professor Pronto

"Konbanwa, Shi. I am Keiji, I have summoned you to aid me in winning the Sanctum key." the philosopher told the soothsayer. The soothsayer scowled with indignation as Keiji uttered those words.

"Aid you? Why should I materialize here and aid you? I demand remuneration!"

"You will attain shared wealth and power the Sanctum key gives me, Shi."

"Oh? How do I know you will not turn your back on me, and kill me?" the soothsayer scowled. The philosopher stared the soothsayer in the face vigorously.

"You will not. Nevertheless, I can promise you, I will not let you down. If you assist me, you will earn your wealth..and if not..then I'm afraid I'll have to take more.. dire measures." Keiji looked down at his left hand. The soothsayer glowered.

"Very well. Deceive me, and you will feel agony like never before. Trust me..I've dealt with perfidious hoodwinkers in my time."

Soothsayer

     The soothsayer did not fear Keiji. The dead could not die, and his Command Seals only gave three commands. There was one reason he accepted. All those riches, the wealth he had been fighting for in life. He would never have to do it again, he would have all he needed.
     The soothsayer still needed to act overly valiant around Keiji. Intrepidity was crucial to find out when Keiji was lying. The soothsayer glanced around the room. It was a wreck because of his summoning. Luckily, it was mostly vacant. The soothsayer grimaced.

Krauss and Rider vs Mosaia and Caster

Krauss stepped out of the car and opened the door for the general.  He’s a helpful spirit, by all standards, but a little respect certainly won’t hurt.  Krauss spoke as the general exited the car.  “You mentioned that you could sense other spirits in the area.  Are there any nearby?”

The general concentrated and nodded.  “Yes.  There is a spirit nearby, but it is making an effort at concealing itself.  I can’t pinpoint the location at this range.”  He reached into the car and retrieved his rhomphaia by its ivory handle.  He hefted the considerable weight of the weapon as if it was nothing, holding it with one hand.  His xiphos was already sheathed at his side.

Krauss nodded.  “Well, I suppose we’ll just have to investigate.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mosaia and Caster were hiding in a warehouse a few streets away, behind some boxes.  Caster was sitting cross-legged, putting together some mechanical parts.  Mosaia was looking around the area for potential tools and weapons, her hands clasped behind her back.
Caster smiled.  “Another spirit has entered the area.”
Mosaia returned the smile.  “Very well.  I assume that our knight is prepared for battle?”
Caster nodded.  “Indeed.  I’ve set up some guards in nearby locations, but I doubt we’ll be needing them.  Do you think we’ll engage the enemy directly today?”
Mosaia shook her head.  “No.  It’s far too early in the game to take any undue risks.  We continue as planned.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Krauss and the general walked through the empty streets, warehouses looming on either side of them.  The general stopped and held out his hand in front of Krauss.  “Stop.  Someone’s ahead.”

A shrouded figure stood in the next street, walking toward the pair with purpose.  As he approached, they could see that he was clothed in a long trench coat, a mask, and gloves.  He stood taller than either the general or Krauss, at about eight feet.  Most threateningly, it held a glassen sword in its hand.

Krauss frowned.  “Is this the spirit?”

The general maintained his stare straight ahead.  “No.  Connected to him, perhaps, but not the spirit itself.”

Krauss nodded.  “We’ll have to fight him, then.”

“Very likely.”

The man finally reached the street where Krauss was.  As he approached the pair, he stopped moving for a couple seconds.  The general lifted his rhomphaia, pointing it at his target.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Ms. Mahagany?” Caster asked.  “The knight has found a mage and a spirit.  Apparently the spirit is a Lancer, although the weapon he’s holding isn’t a customary lance... more of a bladed pole.”
Mosaia smiled.  “All right then... let’s begin.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The man suddenly leaped forward at superhuman speeds, his coat billowing around him.  He swung his glassen sword at Krauss, who raised his hands up as if to ward off the blow.  But the general was faster: he parried the blow with his much larger rhomphaia before swinging it directly at the man’s midsection.  The man shrugged off the blow and brought his sword into a defensive position.

“What?” the general said.  “That blow should have killed a man.”

Krauss, however, was too distracted to reply.  He was holding his arms out in front of him, one bracelet on each hand glowing with blue light.  He opened his mouth to chant an incantation.

“Aegis aureum, arma aeternus!”  The bracelets flared with light, and two paper-thin discs of white-blue energy appeared in front of Krauss’s hands.  The man swung his sword for another strike, but the forcefields moved to deflect the blow, which slid harmlessly off.  The forcefields then flew directly to the man’s neck, striking him with their sharp edges.  The man, unpreturbed, simply grabbed the forcefields with his gloved hands and pushed them away.

“Something’s not right here...” Krauss muttered.  “Erigo!”  A blue forcefield appeared from the ground below the man, and disappeared under his coat.  At a wave from Krauss, the forcefield burst into shards that flew in every direction.  The man’s coat was torn to shreds, revealing a metallic body with a glassen skin that had been hidden behind the coat.

The general nodded.  “So it’s an automaton... good work.  Our bladed weapons will do little against it... but perhaps there’s another way.  Krauss, can you apply your magic to my weapon?”

The automaton made a low grumbling noise, and began to go on the offensive again.  Another of Krauss’s bracelets flared up, and three disc-shaped forcefields began to move to parry its attacks.  In the meantime, Krauss peered at the general’s rhomphaia.  “Erigo.”  A blue forcefield appeared around the shaft, ending in a point similar to that of a spear.

The automaton managed a direct hit on one of Krauss’s disc-shaped forcefields, and it flickered out.  One of his four bracelets went dark and gained the appearance of rust over its usually golden surface.  It would take hours for it to regenerate its energy.

The general cursed.  “Now or never.”  He turned his spear toward the automaton and began to parry its sword attacks.  The forcefields acted as cushioning, softening the impact of incoming blows and decreasing traction so the sword would just slide off.

As the automaton was distracted, forcefields were forming around its feet. Not enough to seriously trap it, but enough to trip it up during a crucial moment.  That moment happened when the general finally saw an opening, allowing him to direct a spear thrust at the automaton’s chest.  It was forced to jump back, but its feet got tangled up in Krauss’s forcefields.  It stumbled for a second, then fell down, making a cracking noise.

The general smiled, then brought his spear down directly on the automaton’s body.  The automaton went limp, and smoke began to come out of the hole the general had created.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Caster frowned.  “Ms. Mahagany, we appear to have run into a small issue.  I can rejuvenate the automaton, but it will take time.  I need you to distract our targets.”
Mosaia smiled and bowed her head.  “Of course, sir.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As Krauss walked up to the fallen automaton, the general suddenly grabbed him and pulled him back.  The automaton’s inner workings, revealed by the hole the spear had made, were beginning to glow purple.  As the purple glow spread, the hole in the automaton’s body closed up.

It appeared that various devices stored inside the automaton had begun to activate.  A panel of metal plating disappeared into its body, only to be replaced by a new, even more damage-resistant one.  Its hands were converted into spiked claws, and hydraulic systems appeared in its legs that allowed it to move at increased speed.

As this process continued, the general stepped forward and prepared to strike.  However, the sword the automaton was holding seemed to fly out of its hands, aiming directly for Krauss.  Krauss only just managed to move a forcefield there in time to stop it, but it broke and another of his bracelets flickered out.  He frowned, and his fourth and final bracelet formed a second forcefield.

As the general moved to do battle with the disembodied sword, a figure suddenly leaped from a nearby rooftop, slowing down in the air before it reached the ground.  It was similar in shape to the first automaton, but was made entirely of glass.  Krauss turned toward it and began to attack it with one of his forcefields, hitting it with enough force to crack and scratch its glass.  The broken shards began to fly toward Krauss, and were only blocked by an “Erigo” on the ground between them.

The automaton, its reforming process complete, stood up.  It held out its hand, and the glassen sword flew to it.  The glass minion stood at the opposite side, leaving Krauss and the general trapped between two foes on either side of the street.

The general attacked the automaton with a spear strike, but it merely glanced off the armor plating.  The automaton held out its clawed hand, and a spike shot out of it like a bullet, only barely blocked by a forcefield.  All it has to do is score one hit, and we’re out of commission.  I’d rather not die this early.

The general finally managed to work the spear into a chink in the armor, but was unable to push any deeper.  “Extend your forcefield!” he yelled.  But Krauss was distracted by his own opponent: while he had managed to break off a good portion of the glass creation’s arm, it had broken the third of his forcefields and was pressing the offensive.  The automaton grabbed the spear and was beginning to pull it from the general’s grip by the time Krauss was able to change the forcefield’s shape enough to keep the automaton from gripping it.

The battle was being lost.  The enemy was too powerful and too resistant to attacks for the general to continue fighting it in this weakened, unorthodox style.  The general caught Krauss’s eye, and Krauss nodded.

Two streets away, a forcefield disappeared into the ground.

Krauss winced as he cast another “Erigo” to withstand the creature’s attack.  His already low stores of magic were depleting even further, and he would soon be forced to resort to his final “Aegis Aureum” forcefield in order to avoid being killed.  Krauss heard a thundering noise, and a sound like trumpets, from the distance.  Soon, soon, please...

A glowing gray elephant, which had been penned by a forcefield for most of the battle, rammed into the already weakened glass guardian, which shattered into hundreds of pieces.  The pieces began to slowly move together, but the elephant brushed them out of the way with its trunk.

The general smiled and grabbed on to the elephant’s trunk, which carried him to the elephant’s back.  He held his rhomphaia at his side: the perfect length to attack grounded enemies while atop his mount.  Krauss dismissed the forcefield surrounding it, and the general smiled.

The elephant rammed into the automaton with tusks covered in spikes, and it was sent flying.  It launched projectiles at the rider and his mount, but Krauss, now free to join this battle, blocked them with his forcefield.  The general laughed, and the elephant rammed into the automaton again.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“No, no, NO!” Mosaia yelled.  “An elephant?  I’m assuming control.”  Far away, the sword flew out of the automaton’s hand and began to strike at the elephant.  But Mosaia felt the damn forcefield generator start to block the blows.
She then focused on the automaton itself – moving the glass skin and the glass pieces inside of it.  It swung with a powerful blow, the combination of Mosaia’s magic and its natural mechanics, but it was parried by the Lancer – no, not the Lancer.  The Rider.  She felt the automaton being grabbed by a forcefield and by the elephant’s trunk, being held in place even as she used all her power to try to get it to escape.
A voice came through the audio feed installed in the automaton.
“I am the third greatest general of all time, second only to Alexander the Great and Pyrrhus of Epirus.  I battled and defeated Rome, the greatest empire of history, at the height of its power.  You may call me Rider, and this is my mount.”
In a final act of spite, the glass surrounding the automaton shattered, launching a stream of glass shards at the mage, the Rider, and his steed.  A forcefield blocked the majority of the hits, but some got through, scratching and tearing skin.  She cursed.  Not enough to cause permanent damage.  With that attack, her control over the automaton disappeared, and it fell silent.
Caster frowned.  “It’s over.  Time to retreat.”
Krauss was breathing hard, but with a smile on his face.  Their first enemy, defeated.  He turned to the general, Rider.  “Best destroy it completely before we go.”  The elephant stomped on the automaton, crushing it.
Rider dismounted his elephant and sighed.  “Do not think of this as a victory.  We played our trump card, while we didn’t even get to see the spirit or the mage.  Always be ready to take an advantage when you – or I – see it.  And I realized I forgot a crucial lesson during this battle.  Always play to your strengths.  I’m sorry, but this plan – masquerading as a Lancer – was flawed from the start.”  He sighed.  “But we did defeat the enemy, and we have learned how to fight together.  I suppose that for our first battle, it could have been worse.”
Krauss nodded and opened the car door.  Rider got in the driver’s seat, shut the door, and drove the car back to Krauss’s home. To all appearances, it seemed as if he had been driving all his life instead of having lived two millennia ago.
Alexis and Saber vs David and Berserker
Monday. 12:19 AM.
By midnight, the city had fallen into near-total silence. Alexis signaled Saber to dematerialize, then propped open her bedroom window and sneaked out of the manor.
"Which way are we headed?" She asked her servant.
"North." Saber rendered back into physical form. "The servant ran in the direction of a nearby construction site. I can only assume that it went there to be able to fight in private. It shouldn't be too far from here, actually."
Alexis nodded and continued walking, following closely behind him.
It had taken no more than twenty five minutes for the two to reach their destination. Saber slowed his pace in anticipation for his first battle. Alexis was accordingly anxious at the thought that death could come at any moment on the battlefield, and no one could come to her aid in the event of critical injury.
The construction site was in its early stages of development. Its foundation was newly dug, and very few beams were in place, the rest stacked in piles to the side to be used later. The area was clouded with thick fog, but they could make out a faint figure on the other side. As they approached, Saber could feel a pulse of power radiating from it. The view was clearer now; sitting on the top of a tall metal beam was a massive man wearing little more than a tattered rag.
Saber stepped up to him. "Are... are you a servant participating in the Sanctum War?"
The man simply grunted, paying little attention to him.
"I said..." Saber cleared his throat. "Are you a servant?" Again, the large figure gave no answer. In his mind, the knight appeared with far too many words and too few actions. Saber switched up his tactics. He widened his stance, causing his master to back away a few feet, then reached for his scabbard. The sound of a sword being drawn forced the man's eyes wide open. Saber had drawn a large sword, rusted beyond recognition but undeniably alarming. "Does this appeal more to your senses? I am Saber, fighting as the most powerful of the seven classes."
The large man grunted much more loudly now. He couldn't fully comprehend what the knight meant, but the impression he gave off was one of arrogance. This arrogance offended him- even angered him. This weak boy, no older than twenty, was to challenge him? He would have none of us.
The man stood up from his perch for all to see his massive size. He then leaped from it and landed on the ground, which shook violently beneath his weight.
Alexis screamed in fear and retreaded behind Saber. "Is this... what I'm getting myself into? Are all opposing servants this monstrous?"
Saber felt his enemy's strength exponentially rise, but behind all of that he could faintly sense another mage- most certainly this warrior's master. "My lady, you must not stay here!" He yelled to Alexis. "This servant's master is west of here. Hurry!"
Alexis ran off as Saber faced the great man, who now pulled out a blade of his own. It was beautifully crafted, constructed of bronze and finished with incredible decorations in stark contrast of its wielder. "What is your name?" Saber asked him.
In response, the man let out a thunderous roar. "BER... ZER... KER!" With inhuman speed, he lunged at Saber and let out an attack that seemed to rip apart the air it traveled through. Saber stepped back and held out his sword to defend, and the two blades made impact- however, Berserker's blade was crushingly superior. Saber was sent flying back before crashing into a pile of metal beams.
The noise was audible even from where Alexis was running. She stopped to look behind her. A cloud of dust mixed in with the fog and created an ominous atmosphere. In the corner of her eye she saw a man running in the battle's direction- her target. She opened the Anthology and cast Snare, summoning metal chains around the man's feet, tripping him to the ground and rendering him apparently immobile. She slowly approached him.
The man was bald, had a beard and wore a trench coat... it was none other than David Arnold Schindler, one of the most powerful tutors in the world. Currently he was out of breath from attempting to catch up with his servant, who had apparently run off to this site. He looked up to Alexis.
"Ah... so, it seems he's already gotten into a fight." he said, looking into the distance. Swords impacting and loud crashing noises could be heard in the sevants' direction. Alexis turned to The Book of Flame and aimed for his head, trying to give an intimidating expression, but David could clearly see the fear in her eyes. Berserker's screaming was being burned into her mind. "Do you intend to kill me?" he asked her.
"I..." The hand holding the Anthology began to shake. "...I do! I'm determined, even if it means ridding the world of a great man like you."
David coughed, looking down at the chains binding his legs. He turned back to Alexis. He muttered: "I am NOT a great man." With a flexing of a muscle, Dave unleashed a powerful pulse around his body. The chains were ripped to shreds instantly and Alexis was pushed back numerous feet. She fell to the ground, then quickly got up with the book still in hand. She cast three volleys of Spark but failed to aim properly. She felt an overwhelming force against her legs and realized she was much heavier.
"Is this... gravity magic?! No... I think it's something else. Have I read about this before?
She was caught up in her thoughts, not noticing David rush at a high speed in her direction. She saw him just in time to dodge the first punch, but the second hit her square in the stomach. She coughed and backed up, but couldn't move very quickly due to his magic. She switched to another spell and quickly cast it- Ignis. A huge wall of flame rose between them as she caught her breath. For now, Dave was having trouble figuring a way to pass this obstacle.
One hundred feet away Saber was under heated pressure. Berserker relentlessly attacked from numerous angles with no clues to any conventional fighting style. Saber could just barely manage to deflect the vast majority of them, but he couldn't find any openings for a counter attack. Berserker cornered him against a metal beam and swiped at his head. Saber ducked under the strike and cut the beam at a diagonal angle, causing it to fall on his enemy's head. Recoiling at the impact, Berserker staggered  backward, giving Saber a wide opening to attack. He managed to make a clear strike to his stomach, forcing a yell of pain from him, but the cut itself was not very deep and was quickly shrugged off. Their blades clashed once more, but Saber knew he wouldn't last much longer under these circumstances. He backed up and raised his sword aloft.
"Enough!" He yelled. "If my words are not completely lost on you, then behold. Your sword is mighty, Berserker- it may be the best in the land. But mine is not one to be underestimated! Behold, my Noble Phantasm!" The rusted sword made a crushing noise- the surface visibly ****, yielding light underneath. Saber's blade burst a pillar of gold, revealing its true form- a long sword of magnificent craftsmanship, coated in yellow and black. He promptly charged at Berserker and the two fought on much closer terms.
David lunged into the air and vanished among the mist. Alexis composed herself and readied The Book of Thunder. A noise flared behind her. She cast Shockwave in its direction, releasing a deafening noise, but her attack was guided to nothing. The mage was still hidden. Another noise. She was more careful not to strike this time, making sure to conserve mana.
Saber could now confidently deliver blow after blow against Berserker's sword, which was now on the defensive but still putting up a serious fight. Saber pushed him back a few feet. His blade began to glow again. Faint chanting could be heard from it as he prepared a coup de grâce.
Finally, David descended from the mist and swept at Alexis' feet, knocking her over. The attraction between her and the ground was almost painful. It took her all her might to get up. Incoming was the mage yet again, ready to deliver a fatal blow. She opened the book and cast Shockwave again, at point blank range, while he unleashed a pulse of immense repulsing force. The two were blasted in opposite directions. Dave was knocked unconscious upon contract with a beam and Alexis made impact with the ground. She had landed on her right leg, which made a terrible snapping noise. She shrieked in pain. She looked to her left hand.
In Saber's mind, he could clearly make out something. "Saber! Please, I need you!" the distressed voice yelled. It sounded as it writhing in pain. His sword stopped glowing and returned to a rusted state. With a flash of light, he vanished, leaving his opponent alone.
He reappeared by Alexis' side. Her leg was broken. The enemy master was unconscious, laying on the ground yet still breathing. Saber payed him no attention and focused on Alexis. She ordered him, in a voice strewn with pain: "I use my first command seal and order you to take us both back to the library immediately!" They both coated with light and disappeared from the scene.
The library was a welcome silence, but Alexis was still in serious pain.
"Have you any bandages?" He asked.
"I... I have something better. Look through my desk, I should have a book called The Book of Salvation."
"The Bible? I understand the pain you're in, Madam, but I believe you can survive this-"
"No, Saber. That's... for if this doesn't work. The book I'm referring to is green with white letters." She clenched her leg. Saber quickly looked through her desk and found the book. He gave it to her. She opened it to a certain page and slowly cast a healing spell on her leg. After an hour of continuous work she had fully healed, but was completely drained. She looked up to her servant, then fell unconscious.
He sighed in relief. "Sleep well, Master. We've just begun."
David
5:00 AM
David was still pacing the floor of his campsite, muttering to himself angrily. He'd come to a few minutes after Saber and the girls' retreat, elected to come out here and use this as his BOO for the remainder of the war, and quickly had begun pacing. And occasionally yelling out loud and punching something, but mostly pacing.
"Damn it, DAMN IT. I was being an IDIOT, I KNOWINGLY HELD BACK, that is something you NEVER DO in a war. I should KNOW that. It doesn't matter if you're fighting a girl a third your weight, you DON'T HOLD BACK. DAMN IT."
Berserker watched him rant with a vague interest, cleaning his teeth with a butter knife because of the distinct lack of super-sized toothpicks. Although put off that his opponent elected to flee, his mood was still much improved from when he'd been summoned. He'd had a good fight, and his blood was rushing through his arteries and pounding in his ears, and his E-Ko-To was vibrating eagerly in anticipation of another battle, and that was all that mattered.
David had sat down at the opposite end of the large tent, berating himself occasionally. There was very little in the way of furniture; several cushions littered the ground and two large chests were positioned opposite the entrance; one filled with weapons and equipment, the other filled with maps and spell instructions and the like. David poked his nose out of the flap and surveyed the area.
Training Ground Zero. David's home away from home.
The empty fire pit sat near the tent, at the center of a wide clearing. The forested edges of the clearing were near-invisible in the darkness, for sunlight was still 15 or 20 minutes away. David, however, didn't need light to know what parts of the area were littered with the snares and traps that his students had built once upon a time. Good old-fashioned hunter-gathering. Indeed, the only piece of technology in the clearing was the small radio on top of the equipment chest.
David sighed deeply, before taking a breath. His voice had started to hurt from all the chastising. He needed to calm down and think. He could have probably destroyed that girl, but he underestimated her and held back to avoid grievously injuring her, and it had ended with his loss. He would do better next time. He would be on the offensive, and he wouldn't just be aiming to slow them down. He would be after blood. And one day he would be legendary.
The first ray of sunlight shot across the clearing, illuminating it in a soft glow. David's face looked skeletal in the dimness. His eyes, however, burned with defiance. Next time, things would be different. That was a given.
