Nature or Nurture
« on: May 25, 2015, 04:50:11 pm »
Though some people may have never heard of this topic, I think it's worthy to debate on. Some people think that the cause of someone doing bad things in their life is because of genetics (not going into that right now), However others (including me) believe it's the influence around us. What do you think?

I feel that this is a false dichotomy, and that both genetics and surrounding environment influence a person's life.  It really depends on what you're looking at: body style, for instance, is almost entirely genetic.

If we're talking about criminals, though, then I'm more inclined to lean toward "nurture."  While there definitely is some genetic basis for serial killers and the like, there's no way we can look at genes and determine if someone will be a criminal.  Nurture has a much bigger impact in that regard, as evidenced by strong correlations between poorer neighborhoods and crime rate.  The one exception, I believe, would be in genetically caused mental disorders predisposing someone toward serial killing or criminality.

Check out this website they express the topic in further, though simple matters.

What people don't realize is that your genes are a part of you, and that you can't excuse your actions just because you had genes for them.  The article raises concepts like genetic predispositions removing free will, and while I won't get into the topic of whether 'free will' exists anyway, the fact of the matter is that even if your genes make your brain slightly more reckless or prone to crime, it's still you who is deciding to do all of these things.  That's one step away from saying "a neuron in my brain fired and made me kill him, so it wasn't me who did it!"  (And yes, slippery slope, I know, but what's really the difference?)
