It's fairy obvious now that Ebony's power holds the key to joining "Light and Darkness". I need to find a way to get close to her without seeming like a total creep. Easier said than done! Ebony's real tough. She wears all black and once punched Fred in the face. I don't want to get on her bad side. I can't talk to her right now... if I told her about the book, I'd clearly be the laughing stock of the whole school. That wouldn't be a very good start at all.

Maxton's getting out of the hospital tomorrow. It's pretty lucky he snagged fast healing from some guy, or else he'd have been there for weeks. If he can just get Ebony's power, we can pull this off without her. I think Maxton takes powers with skin contact. Awkward... well, maybe we'll get lucky and she'll ask for a pencil.

August 23rd, 2410

Maxton's back. He's really ticked off at our power class, and I don't blame him. That was brutal what they did. Sure, he wasn't spectacular, but you'd think they'd be impressed by his diverse range of powers. You know what they say, though- quality over quantity.

We've begun the sparring unit, and because of my whole laser stunt I've been partnered with J' Blackstone. I better have the fire department on speed dial, because he's the son of THE blackstone pyromancer, Edward Blackstone himself. You know, the guy who puts on all those crazy fire shows. Maxton's been partnered with a girl named Arlet Jetson, who has power over slowing time. Boy, could a power like that be useful. She wears a coat and gloves, though, so I guess he'll have to headbutt her to get her power. Also, I've noticed Maxton's version of the powers he gets seem to be really basic. He can't use pyromancy nearly as well as J', and his usage of lasers seems a bit limited compared to mine. I wonder how he'll react to power over time travel...

Ebony's partnered with a shady looking guy named Delsin. He said he didn't have a last name, he was just Delsin. Odd. He has a pretty freaky power- he can summon knives from midair and levitate them. Also, he wears that ominous dark hoodie all the time. What, is he hiding from something?

August 24th, 2410

The sophomore's out of his coma now. His name's Ricky, and he has power over stone manipulation. (He's where Maxton got his rock powers) I think he's still angry about me sending him flying on the first day of school, but I doubt I'll get any trouble out of him.

He's back just in time for our first history test. It's all about the life of Cassandra hook. Did you know that she couldn't talk until she was eight years old? Is that important? No- unless you're in history class. That's how it is around here.

Science is really confusing me. All this genetics stuff- half of the crap Dr. Riechart teaches us sounds like he's making it up as he goes.

Well, what do you know, Ricky's in my power class. Goody goody. Since today is technically his first day, he showed the class his powers like we all did on the first day of school. As it turns out, he's really powerful- he summoned a huge stone elephant that had a mind of its own. Though, the moment was kind of ruined when Maxon made a stone mouse that made the massive beast scream and run away before they were both dissipated by our teacher. (She has the power to disable other people's powers. What a lousy fate.) Great, now Ricky hates both of us.

Well, after that I began the first day of the sparring unit with J'. His real name is Jarrin, by the way, but he goes by J' because people keep mispronouncing it. He's pretty cool, actually, but he's REALLY popular. I can't hang out with him during lunch for two reasons. One, he's always crowded around a huge group of people, but also... Maxton. Did I mention we're not very popular?

I still haven't forgotten about the book. Ebony scares me, though, and I really don't want to get anywhere near Delsin. Maxton's more brave than me, but I'm afraid he'll get his head cut off.

Monday, August 30th, 2410

I'm going to put up the day of the week from this point onward. I initially didn't expect school to play such a big role in my studies, but heck, what can you do? It'll make more sense for you from now on.

Last week was pretty slow. I've been training in combat with J' and eating lunch with Maxton, but not a whole lot's been going on. Today, Maxton finally got the courage to ask Ebony to give him her power. She didn't take it well. Not only did he get hit with a sledgehammer made of shadows, but he didn't get to make skin contact. We're back at square one- no, this is more like a step back.

Tuesday, August 31st, 2410

The end of the sparring unit is on the first of October. That means a full month of going toe-to-toe with J'. I'm no weakling, but he's in a league of his own.

My powers, as you know, involve laser. I can temporarily turn a small object into pure light and change its shape. Now, I can't use this to permanently alter the shape of the object, but it's pretty cool in those rare occasions where you'd need to fit a wallet in a piggie bank... I can also shoots blasts of light from my hands. They look dangerous, but I don't think they can seriously injure you. I'm working on making a spear made of light, but so far I haven't had any luck.

At the end of the unit, there's going to be a combat tournament among the class. The match ups are going to be randomized, but chances are I'll be meeting Maxton if I don't get defeated before then- he may not be the strongest, but he's really clever.

Friday, September 3rd, 2410

There's a clear divide between guys like Maxton and guys like Jarrin. Maxton can be a real rascal, you know- always trying to flirt with girls who clearly are not interested in him. I don't blame them. Maxton's sort of a jerk sometimes. Lately he's got his own little pack of friends that quite frankly I don't want to get involved with. Today he really wanted me to join them in ditching school, and I was really tempted to, but then I remembered my dad. He wouldn't be happy with me.

I declined and sat with J's group during lunch that day- he's warmed up to me. Not pun intended. There's like twenty guys and girls all around him. Being the son of a flaming super star, I guess he's entitled, but at least it doesn't get to his head. Maybe a little. J's dating a girl named Lucy, who's also popular. She can manipulate wind. I know, because she blasted me thinking Maxton sent me over to pick on them. After J' cleared things up, they let me in the group. I think I'll be staying here from now on, but I'm still friends with Maxton.

There's this cute girl in the group, though. She sort of sits in the corner listening to the conversation, but doesn't really talk. She's pretty shy. I didn't catch her name. Maybe I'll ask J' tomorrow.

Saturday, September 4th, 2410

I thought about the girl in the corner all yesterday and today, then I finally decided to give J' a call. He said that her name was June, and that while I shouldn't be afraid to go for her, shy girls like her would be scared off easily if I were to come on too strong. I guess I better take it slowly. One thing's for sure, I'll be sitting with J's group again.

Ugh, I feel so stupid. I went to school today, on Labor day. We don't have school on labor day. When I turned around to leave before anyone noticed me, I saw someone's shadow. Apparently that someone saw me and made a run for it. I curiously chased after the shadow. It led into the Janitor's closet. I ran in and turned the lights on, but nobody was there... Odd. I took the train home after that.

Tuesday, September 7th, 2410

This is probably the first time I've ever looked forward to going back to school. One, I was eager to get away from that thing from yesterday, but also that one girl June.

Maxton was a bit upset when I told him I would be hanging out with J's group. I guess he still wants me to become one of his crazy rascal pack. I just don't think it's right. A week ago, I would have said yes, but my life is changing at the speed of sound. I'm not sure anymore.

I ate lunch with J's group again today. I guess this is going to be a regular thing. I certainly hope so. We got into a heated (but not by any means serious) discussion about peanut butter and celery and how it was somehow affecting the American Council's decision making skills. I got a little caught up in it, forgetting few a precious minutes about why I came here in the first place.

Again, June was sitting in the corner. I got a glimpse at her. June's eyes are a soft shade of blue-green. Her hair's jet-black... I think. She's wearing a white hoodie, so it's hard to tell. I saw her reading a book. The cover read "PSYCHO". I remember looking at that book a few years back. It's about a boy who comes too close to becoming god and dies a horrible death. It's such a sad ending to such an unassuming book, I almost cried just at the memory of reading it. From the looks of it, June's about three fourths of the way finished with the book. That was the part that affected me the most.

I still haven't gotten the chance to talk to June yet. Part of me wants to get more focused on getting Maxton Ebony's power, but this is also important... for me, that is. The book can wait... right?

Maxton's got this hair-brained scheme to find a way to "Even the playing field" among everyone else at his school. He says he and his friends are going to break into the Antonio vault to steal what he thinks is a bunch of experimental power-boosting serums. You know, the ones that have been all over the news- they say this experimental formula is capable of making a sort of ultimate soldier, when paired with the right power. Maxton actually wants to steal it.

He must be joking, right?

Maxton's actually serious. He said he's going to break in on Sunday and steal the experimental power-enhancers. I didn't think he'd ever go this far! He really wants me to join him and aid his escape, bu I declined. We're pretty mad at each other.

I keep having the news tuned in, waiting to hear about some rascal being arrested for breaking or entering. Part of me wants him to get caught so he'll learn his lesson. The other half, well...

I don't think I could ever be a criminal. I don't think I could handle that kind of life. What Maxton is doing is absolutely ridiculous. Does he know something about those serums I don't?

Monday, September 13th, 2410

Maxton and I got into a real loud fight today. In private, of course.

Neither he nor his friends were caught- they couldn't even get close. He told me his powers shorted out as of a nullifying beam of some sort. My guess is, since I haven't heard of anything like that, the "Power nullification ray" must also be in testing. Maxton was real ticked, but I think he had it coming. He learned his lesson, and I'm glad he didn't need to get his leg broken over it. We're definitely not what you'd call friends anymore, though...

Oh, and another thing.

You know the book I have, about the Spirit World? I found it at the library. The local one, not the school one. They have giant archives of century-old books there, so they had no problem when I asked to rent this one for an extended period of time. I went to the library today to renew it for another two months, but when I got there I saw someone already at the desk, which is really weird these days. I mean, 99% of literature is digital as of 2400, so seeing more than a handful of people at the library of physical books is rare. Anyway, the person at the desk was wearing a white hoodie, so I didn't recognize her at first. I remember what she was saying, though. The librarian was talking to her.

"Who would have thought? There are four million different books at this establishment, and the old book you're looking for is currently out at the moment! What are the chances?"

"Uh... well, that would be one in four million. Do you know when it might be back in?"

"Well, that shouldn't be too long. It'll be back in when the young man who rented it will be back to turn it back in- and that would be... right now! Hello, Mr. Watson."

The person in the hoodie turned around... it was June. I could feel my face burning.

"Hello... Ark, is it?" June addressed me. It was weird hearing her talk... but her voice was so soft. A bit quiet. "I remember you from school."

"You do, huh?" I dumbly replied.

"Yes. You came on labor day." I felt my face flaming white hot. How could she have known? Without thinking clearly, I made a break for the door, but remembered that I had to renew my book. I awkwardly turned around and put my book on the desk. June peered at the book. "Hey, that's the book I'm looking for." Her voice picked up a bit.

Before I knew it, I was back at my house with June, exchanging notes. I'm studying the spirit world, and she's trying to prove that there's life after death. I hadn't considered this, but perhaps our theories could complete one another.

Uh, don't read that last sentence in a creepy way.

Hey, I guess I made a new friend today. Maybe more than a friend. She's pretty nice.

...Dang it, I forgot to ask what her power was!

Tuesday, September 14th, 2410

I "accidentally" got hit in the head with a large rock by Maxton today. By the way, did I mention? He's got Arlet's time slowing power. I wonder what kind of stupid pranks he's going to use on me with it. I'll sleep with one eye open.

Anyway, the head injury was minor but I got sent to the hospital for immediate care. I'm in the hospital as I'm writing this journal entry. Yes, I had my journal delivered to me. Hey, it gets boring sitting in a bed for twelve hours unable to sleep.
