Does anyone here like webcomics? I've read a few, including 8-Bit Theater and a little bit of Looking for Group, but my two all-time favorites are:



The Order of the Stick (PG13)

I've never had the opportunity to figure out Dungeons and Dragons, but I still love this comic. The first few dozen strips are just silly jokes with no real direction, but it's become a very complex story with great characters and a perfect blend of epic and funny. If I had to choose a favorite part...I really like the battle for Azure City and the second fight between Roy and Thog. I also particularly like this conversation between Roy and Celia.

Speaking of which, Roy is probably my favorite "fighter-type" characters of all time. His insistence on defying the "fighters are dumb" cliche is played for laughs early on, but it ends up making him a really unique character. And speaking of best protagonists...



Girl Genius (PG13, but it gets pretty violent in places, particularly with scenes involving Zola)

The tagline: "Mad scientists rule the world. Badly." How could that not be good?

Girl Genius takes place in steampunk-style Europa. Some people are born as "sparks," boasting incredible scientific abilities, often at the expense of sanity. But the fraction who (mostly) maintain their consciences become powerful forces that make some very interesting stories.

There are just so many things to love about this comic. Most of the characters, whether good or evil, are extremely strong, smart and a little bit crazy. Death rays are necessities. Robots and monsters are everywhere. Romance is forged through mutual love of mad science. Plot twists are often worked out by the protagonists long before they're revealed, and the ones that are surprising are very surprising. This comic defies all expectations in all the right ways.

It's like all the "evil science" cliches are made mainstream. Agatha is a lovably crazy main character, and while she isn't an evil mastermind by any means, she could certainly pass for one in the later volumes. The "jagers," artificially-created orc-like monsters with an insatiable love for battle, are some of the most entertaining characters in the comic (particularly Andre, Maxim and Mamma Gkika). Of course, there's also plenty of epicness as well (read: Von Pinn, The Other and every time Agatha gets angry).

My favorite part would have to be...everything in Mechanicsburg and Castle Heterodyne. The characters get crazier, the story and world really take shape, and the dark comedy gets a lot more focus.

Also, wow, I completely forgot about xkcd and Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal. They're both pretty mature, but also my favorite non-story-based webcomics.
