Governor Kingsley

Governor Kingsley looked at himself in the mirror, preparing himself for his Morning Address.  His suit was neatly tucked under his body, his wheelchair was clean and shiny, his head was cleanly shaved, and the wing-like appendages that stemmed from his lower body were neatly folded around his back.  The public couldn't actually see him over these radio messages, but he had tried giving them while still in his sleeping clothes before, and the psychological impact of feeling formal and prepared for the day shone through in his messages.  Regardless, he would have to go outside anyway.  The populace liked to see their leader, especially in tough times.

He wheeled over to the radio transmitter, let out a breath, and began to speak.

"Good morning, citizens of Vreme!  This is your weekly Morning Address.  I hope you've all gotten a lot of rest last weekend, and are ready to have a productive day of work.  I know I am!"  He laughed.

"Now, there are a couple issues I'd like to address.  First of all, recent attacks from the Corpus Noir have put a dent in our food supplies.  They targeted our stored grain and other food supplies, and while almost all the farms and growing operations that surround the city have been left intact, the harvest isn't for another couple months.  I'm afraid that grain prices are going to go up, and the food packages that we send to impoverished citizens will be a little bit smaller.  I hope that this event will help drive our young citizens away from the Noir and towards a better future for all of us."  He took a sip of water.

"Speaking of which, I'm happy to announce that our Watcher membership is higher than ever!  Hundreds of years ago, young men and women joined the military.  Now, they can join the Watchers, our newest counter-terrorism group.  With your help, we can prevent further attacks by the Noir.

"Again, I'm sorry that our planned guest speaker for today, the famous singer Lucia il Terminale, was forced to cancel.  She was gravely injured in a recent suspected terrorist attack, and needs to conserve her energy before her concert tonight.  Regardless, I hope many of you can be there to support her in these dark times.

"Thank you for listening.  This has been Governor Paul Kingsley in your Morning Address.  Have a great week!"

Kingsley turned off the transmitter and sighed.  He was fully aware that the Noir were almost certainly not involved in the attack on il Terminale.  The evidence just didn't add up, nor did it mesh well with their previous attacks.  Whenever the Noir did something, they almost always publicly announced it, just like in these granary attacks.  Still, though, it was important to note the possibility of the Noir's involvement, make sure the populace stayed focused on the biggest problem of their era.
