Saber of Ages Past

"Thank you.  Then, my name is Hang Tuah.  I see that you have performed a variation on the summoning ritual... that must have taken considerable skill.  Perhaps you would like to admire your handiwork?"

Saber held his sword in front of him.  It was a jagged kris blade, and faintly glowed with blue light.  On its hilt was an engraved image of a man on the ground, praying to a collection of gods in the sky.  He then turned the blade around.  Rather than simply rotating, it seemed to twist in midair, straightened out the jagged edges until it was long and thin, like the needle of a syringe.  The engraving now showed the god striking a bolt of lightning down on the mortals, who were running and screaming.  Saber's clothing had changed too, to a more formal style.

"There," he said, his voice now softer and less battle-hardened.  "The traits of a Saber and an Assassin, in one.  But there is one question left to be asked... Why do you fight in this war?"

Marcell Krauss

"I... I seek greatness." He paused for a moment. "However... I don't think this war is enough to achieve that greatness." Marcell turned his attention to his forearm, using his hand to trace over his Command Seals.

"The wars are just cycles of conflict that have been repeating for centuries. Ruler chooses a few lucky individuals, they fight to fulfill their ambition, they die, and then it starts all over again." He turned around, his gaze directed above off into seemingly nothing. "I want to make a difference. In order to do so, I can't be content with being a part of a loop." He turned back around towards Saber. Fiery resolve flashed in Marcell's eyes.

"This will be the last Sanctum War. Once I win, I will end this cycle. That will be my mark upon this world. Any objections?"

((Just an FYI that the Clubs now have enough information to reasonably find the catalyst.  In order to ensure fairness, once the Clubs actively start moving there, the maze should be a little more responsive to the Spades, especially if they're trying to find the exit, which they have the piece for.))

Saber of Ages Past

"Any objections I had would mean nothing.  How may I assist in this endeavor?  Ruler does not take alterations to the cycle lightly, from what I have heard."

Marcell Krauss

"Well, all you really have to do is help me win. Although, I suppose that's easier said than done but-" Marcell smiled. "- I think our chances our pretty good. After that, we'll just have to see what the true extent of the Key's power is. For now it would be wise to seek out the other Spades."

Saber of Ages Past

"Yes, let us go."

The memory faded, and the maze grew strangely quiet – at least, until another cry echoed through the halls.

Marcell Krauss

Marcell leaned against a tree and let out a deep sigh. He eyed the corroded locket in his hand. The 2nd of the three catalysts that Ruler had revealed so far. It just had to be located here of all places.

Aokighara was a terrible place, Marcell decided. It was way too ominous for his liking. None of the other Spades were here with him either, since they were off getting the other catalysts. Only he would be the one here, navigating through this dense forest, tripping over empty shoes here and there, occasionally finding old ropes dangling from the trees…

He didn't want to think about the corpses. Instead, he wondered what made the former Master hide the catalyst in this cursed place. It gave him an idea.

Hey, Saber. What would happen if, say, a catalyst was left behind in a place that would make it impossible to obtain?

Saber

Saber stepped carefully through the forest, each step covering multiple yards of space, almost as if he was teleporting.  His long, thin sword was charged with red energy that seemed about to escape at any moment.

"Well, I believe you've answered your own question.  The catalysts appear where the Masters die; Ruler wouldn't change that.  I presume the war would still start normally, but once they needed the unreachable catalyst the whole cycle would just... stall until someone found a way to get it open."

One of the corpses on the ground began to move, and Saber fired a bolt of red flame at it.  "Of course, the difficult part would be making it impossible to reach in the first place.  Never underestimate the will of a competent mage."

Marcell Krauss

“Hm. I see.” Marcell continued thinking about the catalysts and the nature of the Sanctum War. More and more questions started to arise. What would happen if a catalyst was somehow destroyed? What would happen if all the Masters and Servants died before the war ended?

Marcell frowned. Something else bothered him. Those who win the Sanctum War have their greatest wish fulfilled and are granted with unimaginable power but… there was strangely such little evidence of anything like that ever happening. Why did the world seem so… unchanged? What happened to the Masters after the Sanctum War? They all seemed to have faded off into the background.

Just what is the true nature of the Sanctum Key?

A faraway sound of leaves crunching interrupted Marcell’s thoughts. He turned towards the noise and quickly muttered a scanning spell. He sensed two new mana signatures.

Looks like we have company.

[I think here is a good spot to end this flashback sequence and start another, although I think one more post for Saber would be a good idea if there needs to be a little more closure to this scene. It’s up to you, Nitrox.]

Caster of Clubs

"We should get moving."

Cody nodded in response and recollected the map pieces. Now with a decent sense of navigation they decided to travel east, in the general direction of the catalyst.

As Caster passed by Archer, they made eye-contact for a brief moment. "We'll settle this later." Just as quickly he snapped back to the matter at hand.
In that moment, there was only silence.

Saber of Ages Past

Saber sat down for a moment to catch his breath.  The seventh catalyst had just been recovered from the Clubs.  The Archer of Spades had launched a reckless attack, using his Noble Phantasm in order to distract the Clubs for long enough to get the catalyst, but once Kallisti wore off, he was in the center of a ring of Clubs, who killed him almost instantly.  It was all Saber and Lancer could do to break through, Saber in the thick of the battle, Lancer picking off people by launching spears of light from the sky.

Only one Club target remained, the cowardly Assassin.  Saber twisted his sword, transforming into his executioner's form, and heavy braided rope began to grow out of the floor, aiming for Assassin's arms and head.  A glint of terror in his eye, Assassin activated his Presence Concealment, and slipped away.

"Well, Marcell, all that's left is to summon Avenger.  Are you ready?"

Nicole

"Come, Berserker... we're close." There were no more stragglers. Only two large camps, one sole dot moving unreasonably quickly, and one other sole dot that she knew represented the spade non-master. The time to act was now; with clusters of masters this large, map pieces must be changing hands, and it wouldn't be long before the catalyst was located.

Get ready, group one. Here comes Nicole Hemingway.

The girl took a deep breath. She knew exactly what she was going to say. Map carefully stowed away, she stepped around the corner, and her eyes immediately fell on Anne.

The redhead and her servant were just a few meters away, surrounded by three spades. The sight gave Nicole a momentary pause. Her open mouth stayed silent for half a second, but it was long enough for one of the three spades to say the first words and break the silence.

"Miranda! Is that you?!" Will called.

Miranda. That was a stupid name.

"Yeah. It's me."

Anne

The newcomer stared at her for a few minutes before the silence was broken by the weird-tube-spells dude. 'Miranda' seemed to be a little unsure about something.

Something is off about her, but I've got bigger concerns, like somehow finding the other Clubs... Not easy when you're surrounded by three -now four stupid Spades.

James

James saw Miranda and Beserker, but something seemed off to Assasin. He looked at her, and he found why. Miranda's destructive potential had raised an absurd amount.

James, something happened to Miranda in the maze, she is much much more powerful now.

Well, not much we can do now on a hunch. Let's just play along, and stay wary.

Robin

Robin followed Cody and the rest of the group into the the maze, but as they took a turnthe maze shifted, and suddently there was no way forward, backward, only one tight corridor to the right, which snaked off to what seemed like a huge pit.

"What now?"

Henri

Henri stared at the map for a couple seconds, tracing an odd symbol with his finger.

"Archer, you have the Clairvoyance skill, right?  That enhances your sight.  Can you make out anything in that pit?"

Archer looked down into the pit, his eyes flashing.

"It looks like there's some sort of trap at the bottom, I can make out a wire.  But there's another path off to the side that should be pretty close to the catalyst room."

"Do you think you could fire an arrow down there?"

Archer silently drew his bow, and shot an arrow into the pit.  There was a dim yellow glow from an area near the bottom, and Archer nodded.  He fired another arrow at the platform they were on, creating two linked portals of claimed territory.

"I'm afraid I can only transport one person in addition to myself and Henri down.  Any more could make my Master run out of mana at an inopportune moment.  Can any of you find a way of getting down yourselves?"

Robin

Robin sliently moved up to the pit and knelt, brushing his hand at the side of the pit, feeling it's surface. He moved back towards the group.

"Well, the side of the pit is stable, and there seems to be cracks and small crevices along it. I have 2 daggers in my side pouch, I can climb down the pit with ease. Archer, could you tell me what side to travel along so I don't accidently kill my self and block off the catylyst?"
